The Dandie Dinmont Terrier Completes the Circle

Of the thirty-three terrier breeds (most of whom were first used for hunting vermin and therefore now have an innately spirited and aggressive character with a tendency to chase moving creatures and objects), the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is today more affectionate and attentive. But by no means is it a fearful or nervous breed.

In fact, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier was named after the fictional Dandie Dinmont in Sir Walter Scott»s 19h century novel, Guy Mannering. And the fictional Dandie Dinmont was modeled after a tough old farmer and the terriers he kept for hunting vermin, foxes, otters, and badgers. Once the novel came out, the real world terrier breed in the north that hunt the same pests inherited the name, Dandie Dinmont Terrier»completing, if you will, the circle.

As described by Scott, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier was fearless when it came to other creatures. As well, it is a willful, independent-minded breed. This not unusual in a number of the recognized terrier breeds. What is unique to the Dandie Dinmont is its combined autonomy and affectionate nature, making it ideal for more than inner-city dwelling. That is, unlike many terriers that need to stay indoors or that cannot tolerate extreme weather conditions, this 8-11 inch, 18-24 pound dynamo with the hard and soft fur can adapt with ease to rough and rugged outdoor environments as well as it can adjust comfortably in a domestic dwelling (provided it gets a daily energetic walk, either way).

And the Dandie Dinmont Terrier needs the grooming that accords with its living conditions. In other words, if it stays indoors, it needs only a little»low-maintenance»care: a weekly brushing and a hand-stripping once a year. If, alternately, this breed spends a lot of time outdoors, it should get more regular hand-stripping (pulling out dead hairs) grooming.

Besides the minor grooming, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier just needs to be able to keep its circular temperament. That is, while it is happy and high-spirited out in the open fields and near the wide open waters, it is equally as loving and attentive at the hearth at home. So as it is charming enough to influence, it is just as easily influenced»by a rough and rugged challenge or an easy-resting and relaxed hand.
